The Salt Lake Temple renovation project recently hit another milestone with the completion of vertical coring – a process which entailed drilling 46 holes from the tops of each corner of its six towers to the new upper foundations below. 

Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints consider temples the house of the Lord and the most sacred places of worship on the earth. Latter-day Saints worship in temples for several reasons: to feel God’s love and peace, to learn more about God’s plan for His children and the gospel of Jesus Christ, to make promises with God and with one’s husband or wife, and to unite families in this life and the next through sacred ordinances.

Actor Dennis Haysbert said being in @TheTabChoir and Orchestra at Temple Square’s 2024 Christmas concerts was “a no-brainer for me — and especially when I started to read the script.” 

Haysbert narrated the experiences of Charles Mulli, who helps orphaned or abandoned children in his native Kenya, through the Mully Children’s Family. Mulli was abandoned as a young child, survived begging for food and eventually became a successful businessman and had a family. Then through spiritual experiences, he felt he needed to sell his businesses to help struggling children.   

Haysbert and singer Ruthie Ann Miles joined the Tabernacle Choir, Orchestra and Bells at Temple Square and Gabriel Trumpet Ensemble as the featured guest artists 2024 Christmas concerts Dec. 19-21 and “Music & the Spoken Word” on Dec. 21. Mulli was a surprise guest at the concerts.  

This Church News video, titled “Christmas Concert 2024,” shares about the concert and what each guest said about performing with the choir and orchestra.   

Miles said she has listened to the choir and orchestra “for a very long time. … ”   “I have admired the musicianship, everybody that I heard on the recordings. And I could never have imagined that one day I might could be on the stage and performing with them with the additional gift of having my mom in the audience.”  

Haysbert said of sharing Mulli’s experiences, “It is really hard to get through the story.  

“But I love the feeling that comes over me when I do tell it, because I think everyone on the planet should hear stories like this because I believe it would bring everyone closer together.”

Ground has been broken for the Tacloban City Philippines Temple, one of 13 houses of the Lord dedicated, under construction or announced for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Southeast Asia island nation. It's the first Latter-day Saint temple on the island of Leyte.

Elder Michael B. Strong, a General Authority Seventy and second counselor in the Philippines Area presidency, presided at the groundbreaking ceremony on Saturday, Jan. 18. He offered remarks to the congregation and a prayer to dedicate the site and construction process.

Ground has been broken for the Tacloban City Philippines Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The First Presidency also announced the groundbreaking ceremony for the Birmingham England Temple and released the site of the Huntsville Alabama Temple.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the Tacloban City Philippines Temple was held on Saturday, January 18, 2025. Elder Michael B. Strong, Second Counselor in the Philippines Area Presidency, presided at the event.

In the dedicatory prayer, Elder Strong asked that blessings be poured out among all of God’s children in the Philippines and for all in the temple district to have greater capacity “to act with charity, compassion, patience and kindness towards our neighbors and to go about doing good.”

There are nearly 870,000 Latter-day Saints in almost 1,300 congregations in the Philippines. Since the country officially opened for missionary work in 1961, its Church growth rate has been among the fastest in the world.
